Music review — Federal University of Bahia
Geiname Darfaio was written in 2015, commissioned by the project Música de Agora na Bahia. The piece was premiered in Salvador (December, 2015) by Edson de Lima (Accordion), Érica Sá (Triangle) and David Martins (Zabumba). The concert was intended to challenge contemporary composers to write music for a classical Forró Ensemble (the trio Accordion, Triangle and Zabumba). The materials are derived from the song Feira de Mangaio, by the Brazilian Composer Sivuca – without quotations, as a matter of fact. The sonorities were constructed based on the rich timbristic possibilities from the Ensemble, in order to catch its particular resemblance. For this, the accordion makes possible several atmospheres through Edson’s research on extended techniques. The triangle plays an important role in the piece, pointed out by the zabumba, getting more and more intense until transforms itself in a soloist, in an idiosyncratic passage. The form is symmetrical, constructed as a palindrome of contrasting gestures, reflecting the Forró’s cyclical forms.
