Music review — Federal University of Bahia
Pungência Agônica (Agonic Pungency) was written between 2013 and 2014. The piece was premiered by Mivos Quartet at the project Música de Agora na Bahia, in Salvador (November, 2014).
The work is a metaphor, a musical response for a psychological condition. Nevertheless, the piece is about hope, and presents a process of strengthening as a counterpoint to these forces. The material is derived from the two all-interval tetrachord, through which the intervals are gradually expanded throughout the form.
The gestures are concatenated in order to contrive a growing tension, whose energy is reflected in the symmetrical overall shape. Two conflicts play an important role as a source of ideas: solo/individual versus block/collective and staticity versus movement. The name Pungência Agônica refers to the Milton Gomes’ work Exortação Agônica.
