Alma Nordestina

Edson de Lima

English Translation: Alex Pochat

This particular ensemble (accordion, zabumba and triangle) seems to wear, unconsciously, a kind of armor, bringing with it a cultural symbolism, almost inseparable from “forró”. Since the mid-twentieth century, Luiz Gonzaga, the King of Baião, has consolidated that musical genre, later scattered throughout Brazil by his various followers. Herein, the main proposal resides in the attempt to transport this consolidated regional instrumental ensemble to a worldwide environment; on the one hand, being careful not to break with its essence, and on the other, using compositional tools that could be responsible for this “displacement”. Thus, for this purpose, we have different harmonic contexts dialoguing with the use of extended accordion technique.
