Music review — Federal University of Bahia

This work was written for bassoon, percussion and violin, with approximate duration of 7 minutes, as part of the series Orixás, in process since 2008. This is the forth piece of six pieces composed by now. In the series, I developed the process of “reverse time point” through which, based on rhythms played by Candomblé’s tradicional instruments, I extract pitch-class sets as material for composition. In this specific piece, I use the gam’s rhythm, a kind of cowbell, from Avamunha (vamunha, ramunha, avaninha), played by Exú in some contexts. The pitch-class set 4-27 (0258) was derived from this pattern and applied to the compositional process of the work, both for controlling pitches and, through the composing-out, defining proportions in form. The work was commissioned by the project Música de Agora na Bahia (http://www.musicadeagoranabahia.com) and premiered in August 2015 by the International Contemporary Ensemble (https://www.iceorg.org/) at Floor C – Castro Alves Theater, Salvador – BA – Rebekah Heller: bassoon; Ross Karre: percussion e David Bowlin: violin.
