Zaziê - Quartettsatz op. 103

The original melody comes from the Caboclo tradition, this amazing interface of african, european and native brazilian musical ideas, in other words, a traditional context in which was necessary, in some way, to address the question of ‘where-did-we-come-from’. A similar question is posed to brazilian intellectuals and artists, how do we compose our lineage not being european, african or native brazilian? The piece lives as contradiction, imagining possible dialogues between gestures that come from many distinct cultural contexts - for instance, the almost sacred tradition of string quartet writing and the ritualist performance of afro-bahian cantigas and rhythmic patterns - and, in so doing, brings about the dilemma of critical fusion versus catarthic conciliation.
