Movimento Concertante I is one of three studies for clarinet and orchestra, which can be performed either as a concerto in three movements or as single pieces. Two of them have been awarded prizes: the piece published here was awarded the Prêmio Funarte de Composição Clássica 2012, and will be premiered in Rio de Janeiro in October 2013; another movement has been awarded first prize at the 1st Concurso Interno de Composição “Ernst Widmer” in 2007; the third movement was selected and performed in the Biennial Festival of Brazilian Contemporary Music in 2009.

The pitch structures of two of the movements explore interval cycles and symmetric collections. The piece herein is based almost entirely in the enneatonic collection — also known as the third of Messiaen’s “modes of limited transposition”.
