Uma música nova (2007), for clarinet, trombone, double bass, and piano, dedicated to Marisa Rezende and Grupo Música Nova (Rio de Janeiro), develops from multiple settings of dialogue between the lyrical ardor, “vocal” and unmetrical, and the bodily vigor of the regular motion. The lyrical expression is revealed in the melodic contours that unfold like speech movements, confused, impassioned, discontinuous, unpredictable, and perplexed. The sensorimotor experience of body in movement has its propulsive thrust in a resolute rhythmic pattern, like the conductor rhythm of a maracatu cortege. However, neither the commotion of song nor the impetuosity of dance achieve constant predominance throughout the piece, because they are always diluted in numerous hybridism produced from their constituent elements. The quartet presents several resources of instrumental virtuosity and develops itself through an atonal harmonic context, although one perceives in the texture a prevalence of linear movements and cadencial features that organize the work as a sequential form based on motivic development.
